I previously wrote about Spiralfrog.com, an ad-supported website with free and legal song downloads. Unfortunately, they have since closed their doors. I tried to visit a couple of days ago, and found only a blank page. A Google search yielded an article on CNET.com, “Requiem For A Frog,” confirming that the site is out of business, and speculating about the reasons for the shutdown, which included the current bad economy, and the fact that Spiralfrog’s restrictive DRM was a severe handicap in catching on with listeners.
I’m not surprised, but I’m disappointed. Even though the interface was clunky, and the DRM was a bit of a pain, it was nice to get music for free without worrying about the RIAA breathing down my neck.
Rest in peace, Spiralfrog. I’ll miss you.
